About the Project

In 2005, Wisconsin was one of three states selected to participate in a federal pilot project to develop and deliver abuse and neglect prevention training for caregivers in long-term care settings. The WI Department of Health Services (DHS) contracted with the University of Wisconsin (UW) Oshkosh Center for Community Development, Engagement and Training (CCDET) to develop the curriculum and deliver training. The project's primary goal was to reduce the incidence of abuse, neglect and misappropriation by giving direct caregivers the tools to appropriately deal with challenging situations. Although the pilot project ended in September 2007, the Department continued to fund train-the-trainer workshops through June 2009.

In 2008, the project was awarded first place in the education category by the Association of Health Facility Survey Agencies. www.ahfsa.org/

In August 2009, UW Oshkosh CCDET received a federal grant sponsored by Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI), with matching funds provided by WI Department of Health Services, in order to continue this award-winning program throughout Wisconsin and implement a national training initiative. Funding ended in 2012.

In 2011, the project added a half-day training, “Investigating and Reporting Allegations of Misconduct”. This training is designed for providers that are regulated by the WI Department of Health Services, Division of Quality Assurance(DQA).

For additional information for this project from August of 2009 through October of 2012, please see the Caregiver Training on Abuse and Neglect Prevention Project Overview.

In 2013, the Caregiver Project expanded to include additional continuing education topics required for Wisconsin caregivers in long-term settings. Currently, this training project continues to be offered and is partially subsidized by the WI Department of Health Services, Division of Quality Assurance (DQA).
