Dementia Specialist Courses

The Dementia Specialist Courses focus on relating to people with dementia in specific situations. Each course can be completed in approximately one hour. There is no requirement to finish a course in one sitting. You can start now and finish later (up to 6 months).

Suggested Audience:

  • Any person interested in learning about one or more of the topics
  • People who wish to attain a designation as "Dementia Specialist"
  • Approved Challenging Behavioral Specialist Instructors required to fulfill renewal requirements

Approximate Completion Time: 1 hour (there is no requirement to finish the course in one sitting. You can start now and finish later, up to 6 months).

Cost Per Individual Course: $25

Cost for Dementia Specialist Designation: $60/4 Courses
Prerequisite: Completion of Dementia Generalist for Crisis Responders -OR- Dementia Generalist for Healthcare Providers.
Learners who wish to attain a designation as a "Dementia Specialist" must complete 4 specialist courses within a 6 month period.

Cost for Challenging Behavioral Specialist Approved Instructor (2 Course) Renewal: $30/2 Courses
Prerequisite: Individuals who are Approved Instructors of the Challenging Behavioral Specialist Training.
Approved Instructors of the Challenging Behavioral Specialist Course are required to take a minimum of 2 specialist courses every two years to maintain approval status.

Final Assessment
Participants are required to successfully complete a Final Assessment with a score of 80% or better.
Two attempts are allowed.


Certificate of Completion and Continuing Education Units
Upon successful completion, you will receive a certificate of completion stating the number of course hours.

Continuing Education Units are available through the University of Wisconsin Extension after successful completion of this training and receipt of a certificate of completion. Application forms will be emailed to you. There is a separate fee for this service.
Entry on the Dementia Training Registry
The names of individuals who successfully complete this course, titles of courses completed and dates are published on the UW Oshkosh CCDET Dementia Training Registry. This Registry will be available to prospective employers and to individuals seeking facility or home care services. This Registry does not replace industry standards and regulations for hiring. Processes in hiring must continue to be followed.
