Challenging Behavioral Specialist (CBS) Information

Qualified individuals interested in becoming a Challenging Behavioral Specialist must attend a 6-hour classroom training offered by an Approved Challenging Behavioral Specialist Instructor. This course is not offered or scheduled by UW Oshkosh CCDET. To be eligible to attend the Challenging Behavioral Specialist training, participants must be listed on the UW Oshkosh CCDET Dementia Training Registry with successful completion of the Wisconsin Dementia-Capable Generalist for Crisis Responders or Healthcare Providers.

Upon successful completion of the Challenging Behavioral Specialist course and the final assessment, the approved instructor may submit a roster of these individuals to UW Oshkosh CCDET and then these individuals will be entered into the UW Oshkosh CCDET Dementia Training Registry as Challenging Behavioral Specialists. This Registry will be available to the public and will list individuals trained in dementia care, along with the name of the completed training course and the type of class (online or classroom).

Suggested Audience:

Qualified individuals interested in becoming Challenging Behavioral Specialists. To attend this training, individuals must meet the above prerequisite requirements.

This six hour classroom training will focus on:

  • Recognition of common challenging behaviors resulting from changes in the brain due to dementia
  • Interpretation of common messages the person living with dementia may be communicating through behavior
  • Person-centered approaches to meet the unique needs of people living with dementia

As part of this training, all participants must complete a competency assessment. Upon successful completion of this course and the final assessment, and receipt of class roster and payment, individuals will be listed as Challenging Behavioral Specialists on a publicly accessible UW Oshkosh CCDET Dementia Training Registry. The final assessment offers two attempts to pass at 80% or better.

Course Completion Time: 6 hours

Cost Per Person: Determined by each Approved Challenging Behavioral Specialist Instructor.

Course Completion and Certificate of Completion: Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion stating the number of course hours; and participants’ names will be added to the online registry upon receipt of the roster and payment from the Approved Instructor
