Challenging Behavioral Specialist Courses |
In partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and a designated group of stakeholders, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (UWO), Center for Career Development and Employability Training (CCDET) is developing a series of trainings related to dementia care for crisis responders, caregivers, healthcare providers, family and community members, and other professionals. Recognizing that behavior is a form of communication and utilizing person-centered approaches best equips caregivers, as well as first responders, medical personnel and law enforcement, to respond appropriately to people living with dementia. This training series is one of many trainings available on the topic of dementia and is offered as part of the Wisconsin Dementia Care System Redesign. Individuals interested in the Challenging Behavioral Specialist trainings have two options: Challenging Behavioral Specialist Train-the-Trainer OR Challenging Behavioral Specialist. The Challenging Behavioral Specialist Train-the-Trainer training is offered as a 6-hour classroom training and is instrumental in providing quality dementia care through well-trained, competent caregivers. This training provides qualified individuals the necessary information and materials to train staff and/or others who are interest in learning more about dementia or are working with people living with dementia to become Challenging Behavioral Specialists. Upon successful completion of this train-the-trainer course and the online final assessment, individuals will be listed as “Approved Instructors” on a publicly accessible online registry maintained by UW Oshkosh CCDET. or Qualified individuals interested in becoming Challenging Behavioral Specialists will be required to attend a 6-hour classroom training offered by an Approved Challenging Behavioral Specialist Instructor. Upon successful completion of this course and the final assessment, individuals will be listed on an online registry as Challenging Behavioral Specialists. This registry will be available to the public and will list individuals trained in dementia care, along with the name of the completed training, completion and renewal date(s) and the type of class (online or face to face). Please click on the training links listed below for additional information on these two training courses. Challenging Behavioral Specialist Courses
Crisis responders, healthcare providers, and other professionals successfully completing dementia trainings available through UW Oshkosh CCDET, will be listed on an online registry. This registry will be available to the public and will list individuals trained in dementia care, along with the name of the completed training, the completion and renewal date(s) and the type of class (online or face to face). This registry does not replace industry standards and regulations for hiring. Processes in hiring must continue to be followed. To remain on the registry, individuals must take renewal courses every two years. These courses will be developed and delivered by UW Oshkosh CCDET as web based trainings. Individuals must meet competency levels in order to remain on the registry. There is no requirement to finish the course in one sitting. You can start now and finish later (up to 6 months).
