Course Description
The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (UWO) Center for Community Development, Engagement and Training (CCDET) along with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services has developed a 6-hour classroom training course entitled, Challenging Behavioral Specialist Train-the-Trainer. Recognizing that behavior is a form of communication and utilizing person-centered approaches best equips caregivers, as well as first responders, medical personnel and law enforcement, to respond appropriately to people living with dementia. This training provides qualified individuals the necessary information and materials to train staff and/or others working with people living with dementia to become Challenging Behavioral Specialists. Upon successful completion of the course and the online final assessment, trainers will be listed as “Approved Instructors” on a publicly accessible online registry maintained by UWO CCDET.

Approved Challenging Behavioral Specialist Instructors will receive the following training materials: a PowerPoint presentation, a facilitator guide, a participant guide and a final assessment. These materials will be used to train individuals who have completed the Wisconsin Dementia-Capable Generalist (for Crisis Responders or Healthcare Providers) online course and are listed on the UWO CCDET Dementia Training Registry. Instructors will submit course rosters to UWO CCDET with a nonrefundable $5 registry fee for each participant successfully completing the training. If your organization has more than 50 people who you will be training to become Dementia Behavioral Specialists, please contact Registration Staff at (920) 424-1071 or regstaff@uwosh.edu for special pricing. These individuals will be added to an online publicly accessible registry for Challenging Behavioral Specialists maintained by UWO CCDET.
